How an implant actually works
An implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone, which takes the place of the tooth root. Once it has healed and integrated with the bone, a custom crown is fitted on top. Unlike a bridge, it doesn’t rely on the teeth either side, so healthy neighbouring teeth stay untouched.
It may suit you if…
- You’ve lost a single tooth to decay, injury or infection
- You have a gap you’d rather not leave
- You’d prefer not to have neighbouring teeth reshaped for a bridge
- Your gums are healthy and there’s enough bone to support it
It may not be the right fit if…
- There’s untreated gum disease — that’s addressed first
- There isn’t enough bone, unless grafting is done beforehand
- You smoke heavily, which affects healing and success rates
- Certain medical conditions or medications affect bone healing
What happens, step by step
Consultation and imaging
Dr. Han examines the site and takes a 3D CBCT scan to see the bone in detail. You’ll be told whether an implant is realistic for you, what’s involved, and what it will cost —.
Preparation, if needed
Some cases need an extraction, a bone graft or gum treatment first. That’s quoted separately, and you’ll know before you commit to anything.
Placing the implant
The post is placed under local anaesthetic. Most people describe it as more straightforward than they expected — comparable to having a tooth out.
Healing
The implant needs time to integrate with the bone, typically a few months. You won’t be left with a visible gap in the meantime if the tooth is in a visible position.
Abutment and crown
Once healed, the abutment and your custom crown are fitted and adjusted so the bite feels right.
Aftercare
Implants need cleaning and monitoring like natural teeth. We’ll show you how and check it at your regular visits.
Start to finish, a single-tooth case commonly runs several months, most of which is healing rather than appointments. Dr. Han will give you a realistic schedule at your consultation.
